Every Gift Saves a Child’s Life: Rakuten hosts UNICEF’s first Inspired Gifts store in South East Asia

From today, Malaysians can potentially save, or change, the lives of thousands of children in need with just a click of the mouse or a swipe of the finger, thanks to a new partnership between UNICEF Malaysia and internet services company Rakuten.

Through the partnership, UNICEF Inspired Gifts will be available on Rakuten’s online marketplace, giving Malaysians the opportunity to purchase actual life-saving items for children living  in the most marginalised and vulnerable communities around the world. The purchased items will be shipped directly to children in need in over 190 countries or territories where UNICEF serves.

Each Inspired Gift represents a tangible, life-changing item that is widely used in UNICEF’s programmes, providing children with everything from routine vaccinations to emergency supplies. Malaysians can choose to purchase and send this gift in their own name or on behalf of someone else. Whoever the recipient and whatever the occasion, an Inspired Gift offers a thoughtful, ethical, and waste-free alternative.

“Rakuten shares UNICEF’s commitment in improving the lives and well-being of children around the world. This innovative Inspired Gifts programme is the perfect way for the Malaysian public to give back to those in need, especially during the festive gifting season,” said Masaya Ueno, Director, Rakuten Asia.
Ueno added, “Our recent Rakuten survey found that an overwhelming 79% of Malaysians would donate Christmas gifts for underprivileged communities and 38% cite ‘ease and convenience’ – such as buying it online – as a motivating factor. We are delighted that we can provide an online platform that makes it easier for people to purchase and donate these Inspired Gifts.”
Among the variety of UNICEF Inspired Gifts are:

Immunisation Kit: Contains one vaccine carrier and 20 doses of Tetanus Toxoid (TT) vaccine to protect mothers and babies from Tetanus (RM 98.00)
School-in-a-Box: The School-in-a-Box has become part of the UNICEF standard response in emergencies, used in many back-to-school operations around the world. The kit contains supplies and materials for a teacher and up to 40 students, and includes notebooks, teaching materials, stationaries and more. The purpose of the kit is to ensure the continuation of children's education by the first 72 hours of an emergency. (RM 905.00)
Early Childhood Development Kit: Packed with puzzles, art materials and toys, this kit creates a safe learning and play environment for children up to six years in age. Each of the 37 items inside was carefully selected to help develop skills for thinking, speaking, storytelling, feeling and interacting with others. Soap and water containers are also included to help keep recreational centers healthy and hygienic (RM 967.00)
Ms. Bow Bow Choon, Chief of Individual Fundraising at UNICEF Malaysia said, “We are especially proud of the trust and commitment UNICEF has built with the Malaysian people over the past 61 years. Malaysians have shown themselves to be engaged and generous in supporting our work for children here, and UNICEF’s work for children around the world. This generosity has been reflected time and time again, especially during the aftermath of Haiyan in the Philippines in 2013, and the earthquakes that hit Nepal this year.”
“An Inspired Gift purchased through the online store hosted by Rakuten, will make an immediate difference to the life of a child living in a vulnerable situation. Our partnership with Rakuten will directly impact and improve the lives of thousands of children around the world, and we thank Rakuten for being a champion for children in need,” added Ms. Choon.
Starting from December 2015, a wide selection of Inspired Gifts will be available on Rakuten Malaysia. Shoppers can browse the catalogue and choose a life-saving gift to help a child in need. For those who are purchasing an Inspired Gift on behalf of someone, they can send a personalised UNICEF Paper Doll gift card to a friend or loved one in lieu of the Inspired Gift in their honour. Customers will then receive these cards via post. The Paper Doll gift card offered to Malaysians is the first of its kind for UNICEF’s Inspired Gifts program worldwide. These gifts are available for purchase at http://www.rakuten.com.my/shop/unicef. For every Inspired Gift purchased, Rakuten will give a 5% rebate in the form of Rakuten Super Points back to customers.
